About The Show

The idea for Area 42 began when Mike met Brent at the Got Doubt? meet-up group which Brent ran. The group’s intention was for theists and non-theists alike to come together and discuss various issues and topics in a non judgmental way, free from proselytization. Mike and Brent found they had similar interests in science fiction and fantasy apart from their theological differences. Around this same time, Mike had toyed with the idea of starting a podcast that would review genre classics from an atheistic standpoint, but he soon abandoned the idea as he found most atheists he had encountered were already SF geeks and he didn’t see how the concept would bring anything new to the table (a podcast for atheists who DIDN’T like science fiction would actually be more novel).

However, discussions that Mike had with Brent over different films, books and television shows convinced him that a podcast where the two opposing philosophies tacked the same works of fiction would prove a lot more interesting, and the few people he mentioned this idea to were in agreement. Mike knew that that no-one would make a more apt Christian co-host than Brent himself. Brent immediately agreed to the offer, the rest is history, and future lies ahead…

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The title “Area 42” references two things.

The first is Area 51.

The second is The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, wherein (SPOILERS) it is revealed that the ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is, in fact, the number forty-two.

As life, the universe and everything is the playground of religion and philosophy, the name Area 42 concisely summarizes those concepts and is a science fiction reference at the same time. Quite efficient if we do say so.

AREA 42 is A SPOILERY PODCAST. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WORKS OF FICTION WE REVIEW, THEN DON’T LISTEN.

Our theme song is “I’m From the Future” by The Deathray Davies
